Local Job Market

Every year a new batch of students graduate and enter the workforce hoping for good employment, income and the start of a promising career. Currently the Philippines’ unemployment stands at 6.4 percent. So how will these new additions to the workforce get employment? The government says they have a strategy for the local job market.

The Philippine government says that college students should take up courses related to the needs of emerging industries in order to increase the chances of employment after graduating.

The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz has said that the biggest concern in the Philippine labor market is that the skills set of graduates do not match the requirements of hiring companies. “One of the major drawbacks that confront the Philippine labor market is jobs-and-skills mismatch”, says Baldoz. She says that there are four industries that are expected to increase hiring in the near future because of further expansion- power and utilities, the creative industry, agriculture and fishing, and renewable energy.
